General, Building and Residential Contractors

General contractors are licensed to work on an unlimited amount of construction projects including items such as skyscrapers or other novelty buildings whereas building contractors are restricted to those that fall under certain height and service guidelines as determined by OSHA. Residential Contractors are responsible for a wide array of construction projects that pertain to residential buildings. This can include the construction of new residential buildings, additions to existing structures, remodeling projects, and general repair projects. There are separate categories and classifications for residential contractors that work on single-family homes and those that work on other residential structures such as apartment buildings, hotel construction, and motel construction.

As preparation for the ongoing business of providing the highest quality air conditioning and refrigeration services, an air conditioning contractor must be able to work on heating, cooling, ventilation and refrigeration systems. The job may also include designing, fabricating, installing and repairing those systems for both residential and commercial customers.

Plumbing contractors take on all sort of different jobs, and again, many choose to specialize in certain areas. Basically, anything involving piping systems in residential, commercial or industrial structures and projects is a plumbing job. Far more than unclogging the drain, licensed plumbers must be able to read blueprints as well as know how to do basic carpentry, welding and soldering; a competent plumber is many a householder’s and business owner’s best friend.

A licensed glazing contractor must be able to work with all kinds of glass and glass substitutes. Required skills include but are not limited to choosing the correct material for a specific job, cutting and fitting or assembling those materials for everything from picture frames to shower doors to greenhouses. Glazing contractors may specialize in one or several aspects of glass work but most work with both commercial and residential customers.

All contractors in the state of Florida regardless of their specialty must take the Business and Finance Exam in addition to the trade or contractor exam that pertains to the contractor’s specialty. The test is composed of multiple parts and features a multiple choice question format. It is a timed exam that allows examinees 6.5 hours for total completion. Topics that are included on the test include how to properly manage administrative duties, how to conduct accounting, complying with government regulations, managing human resources, and managing trade. The exam is only offered six times a year so it is important to be properly prepared before taking the test.

General Pool (Commercial, Residential Servicing)

General Pool contractors are highly specialized contractors that not only deal with servicing or installing a pool, but also with repairing and maintaining many other elements that cross into other specialized fields. In short, a general pool contractor is trained to deal with anything associated with a pool that may need installation or repair. As the title infers, they are responsible or construction, repair, and service for all swimming pools. They are also trained to install, repair, or service spas as well. In the case of spas or pools they should have general knowledge of repair or construction with or without solar heating devices in place.

The job of a general pool contractor goes far past simply preparing a hole to turn into a pool or repairing a broken filter system. Pool contractors that specialize in either or both commercial and residential pools must also be able to service any equipment associated with the pool, maintain or service any gas or water service lines that extend to the pool equipment, maintain or service pool piping and fittings, install and repair backflow prevention devices, disconnect and repair pool equipment wiring, and properly connect waste lines. In addition, if written into the contract a pool contractor must also install or provide swimming pool accessories, safety devices, protective fencing, and covers.

In Florida the most common materials are composition or tile shingles, but most licensed roofing contractors can provide several options including integrated solar paneling.
